Things to do in Kapaa, Kauai
Fern Grotto
For and unusual Hawaii adventure, cruise up the Wailua River to a lava rock grotto covered with tropical ferns. At the grotto, you will be serenaded by Hawaiian musicians playing traditional, local songs. The acoustics within this natural amphitheater are fanatastic and greatly enhance the singing and guitar accompaniment. The trip up this historic and sacred river takes about 40 minutes via a long flat bottom riverboat. Boats depart from the south side of the river every 30 minutes.
Kilauea Lightouse
Kilauea Lighthouse is the northernmost point of the main Hawaiian Islands. Built in 1913, it was had the largest lens of it's kind and guided ships heading to and from the Orient. In the 1970's its light was turned off and this landmark was replaced by a low-maintenance light beacon. Call 808-828-1413 for more information.
Koke'e State Park
Commanding views of the lush, amphitheater-headed Kalalau Valley from 4000 feet elevation. Wildland picnicking, tent camping, trailer camping and lodging. Hiking in native rain forest and along rim of Waimea Canyon; additional trails in neighboring forest reserves.
Na Pali Coast State Park
Trailhead for Kalalau Trail at end of Kuhio Highway (Hwy. 56) in Ha'ena State Park; Kalalau Valley also accessible by commercial boats from May 15 through September 15; Miloli'i (May 15 through Labor Day) and Nu'alolo Kai accessible by boat.
Waimea Canyon State Park
Picnicking, tent camping and trailer camping on wild coastline with large sand beach backed by dunes. Scenic setting, colorful sunsets and good views of the high sea cliffs of Na Pali Coast. Swimming in summer; shore fishing. Hot, dry area. Picnic shelters.
